from my experience, directors prefer hearing auditionees singing songs from the musical that one is auditioning for just so they can have a clear idea of how the music sounds on you. singing something that may be from the same era as the musical is supposed to be set, although it also gives the director an idea of your voice in music similar to that of the musical, may also send the wrong message of being unprepared. if there's a role you really are aiming to bag, I suggest you prepare a song of hers that best shows off your voice and then another one of hers with a contrasting style for when they ask you for another song. if it's sandy you're going for, hopelessly is a good choice for your first song and you're the one that i want for your spare. let us know how it goes. merde!

A few thoughts:
#1. DEFINATELY pick something within your voice range that you are comfortable with.
#2. Think about any of the characters you would prefer to play. If you were wanting Sandy, you would probably want to pick a ballad to audition with. Rizzo would be something a little more uptempo most likely with good range.
#3. Auditions are about the people in charge of casting seeing what you've got. Of course if you really wow them with your singing, they're likely not going to care if you sang something from the 50's or a 1990's musical. Just be prepared to go out and impress!!!
BEST WISHES!!!

I think you know this, but due to other answers above, let me just state that unless the director asks you to, you NEVER NEVER NEVER audition for a show by singing a song from that show. The director will have in mind how he/she wants that song performed, and if you sing it differently... not good for you. Also, they may see you as one part, and if you sing a song by another character, they will be focusing on how you casted yourself "wrong", not on how you sing.
That said, check out http://www.musicalnotesnmore.com/ There's a section after each musical synopsis called "Songs of Interest" that are labeled by voice part, up-tempo vs. ballad, etc. It's great. Or go to http://www.musicaltheatreaudition.com/smdb/index.html

To better answer this question, my suggestion would be to find a voice teacher in your area (perhaps check with your local community college) and see if they will do an "asesment" lesson for you. Many of them will do that in order to help you to assess if lessons are the route that is best for you. In this lesson they can tell you wht voice range you have and help you to figure out what song would best suit your voice and be most impressive! I've grown up with a mother for a voice techer (she has a masters degree in vocal performance) and I Can tell you honestly that there's no way anyone can tell you what song would best suit your voice without hearing you sing first and foremost. Too much of it depends on vocal range and style.

Runaround Sue if you have a strong voice. I Only Have Eyes For You if you have a beautiful voice. Cathy's Clown if you have a ballad voice.
