Well, Jesus himself taught that most Christianity would turn into something twisted and bent after he died. That a great turning away from his teachings would begin. If you read secular history as to what the first century christians believed, taught, and how they lived, and compared it to many beliefs today, you would find a large disparity. It's interesting to note that many such ones say this is "ok" because of the traditions of religion, but the original teachings of Jesus actually taught that traditions were not to be followed.
"He said to them: "Isaiah aptly prophesied about you hypocrites, as it is written, "This people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far removed from me. It is in vain that they keep worshiping me, because they teach as doctrines the commands of men." - Mark 7:6,7
There are also a few prophecies where it was stated it would be difficult to find, and what would happen to Chrstianity after the Bible was completed in the first century:
2 Peter 2:1,10b: "However, there also came to be false prophets among the people, as there will also be false teachers among you. These very ones will quietly bring in destructive sects and will disown even the owner that bought them, bringing speedy destruction upon themselves. . . Daring, self-willed, they do not tremble at glorious ones but speak abusively"
1 Timothy 4:1: "However, the inspired utterance says definitely that in later periods of time some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to misleading inspired utterances and teachings of demons, by the hypocrisy of men who speak lies, marked in their conscience as with a branding iron; forbidding to marry, commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be partaken of with thanksgiving by those who have faith and accurately know the truth"
Matthew 7:13: "Go in through the narrow gate; because broad and spacious is the road leading off into destruction, and many are the nes going in through it; whereas narrow is the gate and cramped the road leading off into life, and few are the ones finding it."
Matthew 7:22,23: "Many will say to me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and expel demons in your name, and perform many powerful works in your name? And yet then I will confess to them: I never knew you! Get away from me, you workers of lawlessness."
Matthew 13:24-41: "Another illustration he set before them, saying: "The kingdom of the heavens has become like a man that sowed fine seed in his field. While men were sleeping, his enemy came and oversowed weeds in among the wheat, and left. When the blade sprouted and produced fruit, then the weeds appeared also. So the slaves of the householder came up and said to him, 'Master, did you not sow fine seed in your field? How, then, does it come to have weeds?' He said to them, 'An enemy, a man did this.' They said to him, 'Do you want us, then, to go out and collect them?' He said, 'No; that by no chance while collecting the weeds, you uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest; and in the harvest season I will tell the reaspers, First collect the weeds and bind them in bundles to burn them up, then go to gathering the wheat into my storehouse.'"
"Another illustration he set before them, saying: "The kingdom of the heavens is like a mustard grain which a man took and planted in his field; which is, in fact, the tiniest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the largest of the begetables and becomes a tree, so that the birds of heaven come and find lodging among its branches."
"Another illustration he spoke to them: "The kingdom of the heavens is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three large measures of flour, until the whole mass was fermented."
All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds by illustrations. Indeed, without an illustration he would not speak to them; that there might be fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet who said: "I will open my mouth with illustrations, I will publish things hidden since the founding."
Then after dismissing the crowds he went into the house. And his disciples came to him and said: "Explain to us the illustration of the weeds in the field." In response he said: "The sower of the fine seed is the Son of man; the field is the world;; as for the fine seed these are the sons of the kingdom; but the weeds are the sons of the wicked one, and the enemy that sowed them is the Devil. The harvest is a conclusion of a system of things, and the reapers are angels."
Much of what Paul wrote was this effect, that was already starting:
Acts 20:29,30: "I know that after my going away oppressive wolves will enter in among you and will not treat the flock with tenderness, and from among you yourselves men will rise and speak twisted things to draw disciples after themselves."
