I don't actually have a fever(considered 101 and above I believe), just 99.5 with drowsiness and achiness. Is Aleve a good pain reliever/fever reducer? After having gum surgery the doctor said Aleve does a better job at handling the body's thermostat than Tylenol which does exactly the opposite of what the body is trying to do. It brings up the fever to fight the germs, whereas bringing it down so much works against the body's natural thermostat. Can anyone help me figure this out?

Aleve( Naproxen Sodium) is the over the counter version form of the prescription drug Anaprox. It is a Non steroidal anti inflammatory drug. It is anti inflammatory, anti pyretic, and anti pain. Pyretic is fever. it works by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis at the site of inflammation or irritation in the body. Which means for you where ever you have got a problem Aleve stops swelling and inflammation at the site whether internal or external. It is a very good drug, Better than Tylenol if your stomach doesn't get upset, that really is Tylenol only upside period.

Does Aleve Reduce Fever

A fever is your body's way of fighting infection, bacteria, viruses. Many bacteria can't survive in higher temps, so it's a natural way to get rid of them. That's why a temperature of 99.5 doesn't need to be treated; even a temp of 101 doesn't need treatment unless the symptoms are really bothering you.

Aleve, Advil, Tylenol all work to bring the temperature down. We give Tylenol to patients with good results. Both will help reduce aching. Aleve and Advil (ibuprofen) are anti-inflammatory medications, so work differently than Tylenol. But you can use either for aches and pains due to fever, and to help reduce a fever.

Have you just had gum surgery? If so, an elevated temperature might be a sign of infection. While Aleve or Tylenol will reduce a fever and the aching, they will not treat an infection. If you have an infection, you may need antibiotics to get rid of it. If your symptoms are caused by a virus, you'll just have to ride it out.

Because a fever can occur with many different conditions, other signs and symptoms can often help identify the cause. If you don't know why you have a fever, it's best not to try to lower your temperature. This may only mask your symptoms and make it harder to determine the cause. In addition, some experts think that aggressively treating all fevers actually interferes with your body's immune response. That's because the viruses that cause colds and other respiratory infections thrive at cool temperatures. By producing a low-grade fever, your body may actually be helping eliminate the virus. What's more, most fevers go away in a relatively short time — usually within a few days
