Given that Canada has birthright citizenship, have any U.S. citizen couples - on both sides, father and mother - decided to have their child in Canada? Are there any particular difficulties in doing so? What about costs? Hospital care? Just a question of going to the nearest? Any problems beyond the obvious?

My daughter married a Canadian and lives in northern Alberta. She was covered under his work insurance and the Canadian system because she is there legally as a resident. There were no problems with getting health care throught the pregnancy and for the birth. They also have a program where a nurse visits the day after they come home from the hospital and two weeks later to see how they are doing. The nurse that visited was very nice and supportive. I was there visiting for the birth and things went very well.

My grand-daughter is a Canadian citizen, but they also filed for U.S. citizenship since my daughter is her mother and is a U.S. citizen. The baby has dual citizenship with the U.S. and Canada.

Best Wishes,

Sue

Newbie is 100% correct. I had the same experience myself in Canada, as a US citizen who married a Canadian and gave birth in Canada.

DAR also has a point, wherein I think if a couple who are neither one Canadian citizens and have a baby in Canada, the baby is NOT a Canadian citizen. We don't have that outdated "anchor baby" law in Canada that the US has.

I wonder what are your reasons for asking about this? I hate to think that you may be considering taking advantage of citizenship loop holes or anything like that....

I don't think it does any more. I think they changed that. You really should look into it first, don't you think?

Yes, the problems would be the warts on your soul. Shall I assume that sort of thing doesn't bother you much?
