Do I understand right that only military people that actually die IN Iraq are counted and not contractors or guys who die in military hospitals in Germany.

No, if you die at Walter Reed or Ramstein, you still get counted. If you are hit by a truck, you are counted. If your buddy accidently discharges his weapon and kills you, you are counted.

Contractors and civilians are on a different tote board.

The number of military personnel killed in Iraq is just that--military personnel. Civilian contractors are not counted in the total of military deaths. A soldier wounded in Iraq is counted in the fatality total regardless of where he dies--on the battlefield, in a field hospital, in Germany or stateside. Additionally, soldiers who die in Iraq of non-combat-related causes are also listed in the total of military fatalities. This includes soldiers who die as a result of vehicle accidents, suicide, illness, etc. It is noted as a non-combat fatality, though.

They count contractors seperately from military deaths.

They do count you in if you die in a hospital. I recall several times when CNN made a report about a soldier dying who was shot several days earlier and died of wounds in a hospital. I could be wrong though.

No, you are mistaken. It does not count contractors as they are
citizens not military personnel. They do count military personnel that die in hospital in Germany due to injuries.

I believe the answer you are after is yes.

But I would read on, usually the number is labeled.

As an aside, I think we ( the US military) has been very fortunate in Iraq. ~3,000 military deaths in a major conflict is pretty acceptable. We didn't fair so well in many other "wars."
