Common local anesthetics (2% Lidocaine) used in dental office are acidic and often cause the "burning" sensation when injected.

In order to reduce the "burning" sensation to the patients, dentists and physicians typically use one or the combination of the followings:

1. Neutralize the acidity of the medication by mixing it with 8.4% sodium bicarbonate at the ratio of 9:1 dilution.

2. Heat the medication to body temperature prior to injection.

3. Inject VERY SLOWLY.

Each technique is equally effective; but the combination of the three is the BEST!
