I have a friend in Croatia, who already has a B1/B2 visa till 2011. I would like to bring her here for a year or so so that she help teach my daughters the language and culture and also help out with childcare while I go back to school. She would be living with us and not attempting to work or anything. We would give her some spending money, but there is no real salary or anything. How long do you think she will be able to stay at a time, can she stay for a year straight, or does she need to leave the country after six months, which is something I have heard before, and no, i am not going through an agency.

Ask the immigration service. But if she is working, watch out for minimum wage laws. Room and board counts as compensation, but remember there are rules.

Sorry. Your friend cannot work for you, even if you don't pay her, if she only has a B1/B2 visa. She cannot perform any sort of work that has fixed hours and responsibilities, even if those are not in writing. She also could not perform volunteer work, such as for a school or church.
