(Credibility: I've written chapters on core training in a couple of books, write the questions for the personal trainer national board exam, and was named 2003 ACE Personal Trainer of the Year.)
It amazes me how many people still fall for the spot reduction myth.
There is absolutely no evidence (or even logic) showing that ab exercises do anything to get rid of ab fat.
You lose stomach fat by losing fat all over. You do that with a combination of proper eating, strength training to increase your metabolism, and _some_ cardio (primarily interval training).
If you really want to strengthen your abs, you can read about the core training program I wrote for Her Sports Magazine.

There are three things you will have to do if you want to get rid of your stomach fat it is called the belly fat.
• Diet – This has nothing to do with the latest diet fad. This has everything to do with the nutritional value of the food you eat. Your body is a high performance machine. It needs protein, carbohydrates, fiber, and vitamins and minerals to function properly. A lean healthy diet will allow your body to metabolize its fate store more efficiently
• Core Strengthening Exercises - You must exercise and strengthen all your core muscles, not just your abs, if you want that firm toned midsection. In addition it is vitally important that you also exercise your major muscle groups which include your legs and back. These are the biggest muscles in your body and working them burns more calories then exercising just your abdominal muscles.
• Cardio/Aerobic Training - The key to getting rid of fat is burning more calories than you take in. Aerobic training combined with the tips above does just that. If you want to get rid of belly fat then get up off the couch and go for a walk, take a bike ride, or play some hoops. Find something you like to do and keep doing it.
If you seriously want to get rid of that extra belly fat then you will need to put in a little work. Changing your diet and starting some form of exercise program is the perfect way to start-.

You've gotten some great answers, but, there's one I didn't see. If you increase your dietary fiber, daily, that will tremendously affect your belly fat. According to my research, most Americans get less than 14 grams of fiber daily, however, if you increase that to more than 25 grams per day, your belly fat will begin to shrink. Plus, you will see other health benefits as well.
I found this out while researching the supplement advertised as Lipozene. Now, I'm not recommending that product, I, personally, got some cheap fiber (I mean really cheap!) at CVS that worked wonders for me.
My husband even talked to the pharmacist at CVS about it and he said that I was on the right track: the best way to shrink belly fat is to increase fiber.

Change your diet... for example..you usually have two sandwiches for lunch. Instead have one and have the other one after 3 or 4 hours. Eat stuff that is just enough for dinner, not more not less. Always be conscious about diet. If this works and you feel getting lighter, you can try some exercises.

For starters(btw, just lost 50 pounds myself), there is no such thing as spot reduction...
You lose fat equally across the body(some lose faster than others, but you cannot pinpoint a place and choose to lose fat there). This scientificaly proven and any reputable diet guide will tell you this as well. So there is no specific "stomach" exercise that will kill "stomach" fat....you lose it everywhere when you lose any fat.
You'll just have to lose weight normally(you'll get frustrated as hell waiting for the stomach to shrink).....also, the skin takes some time shrinking after losing weight so you'll have to be patient while it shrinks.
Your basic diet plan and sticking to a healthy diet afterwards will do fine....

I have been working out my stomach to get abs. You don't reallly need to do aerobic or cardiac training like someone else said. That is for entirely a different purpose. If you want to work out your stomach then what you have to do is do situps/crunches. And I guess watching your diet wouldn't hurt either. This totally worked for me. Not only do ur stomach muschles lose their fat by working out the calories, you also have nice abs to show off! : )
