Well, if it's still sealed and the contents don't look or smell bizarre when you open the bottle, then I doubt that it's going to poison you. I mean, people drink 20 and 30 year old brandies and wines without any harm.
If it smells odd, looks scummy or discolored, or just plain tastes funny, pour it out. Some information (like "Is this stuff OK to drink, even though it's green with purple specks?") just isn't worth the pain of learning.

I had an old bottle of rum and it was really smooth. the inner side of the lid had deteriorated a little when opening so I had to strain out a few pieces or plastic type material but other than that, it was smooooottttthhhhh and really good
