It isn't good for it, will dry it out and cause it to break off. You need to find a hairstyle that compliments the curls and work with them instead of trying to fight them.

It can make your hair less healthy, yes.
You can use:
1. Products for heat resistant/therapy
2. Use a 2 sided brush (available at most Walmarts) or a round brush and blow dry it (the bigger the round brush the straighter and a difusor on the hair dryer works real well too)
3. Add Baby Aspirin in your shampoo and use a shampoo that is for hair strengthening and try a flat iron on a low temp.
4. Try curly to straight leave in products
Most anything you do can ruin your hair over time but if you straighten your hair and leave it for a few days (wrap it when you sleep) you can eliminate some harm, by not doing it daily. Also use heated items with roller tissue (like the kind used with perm rods), that helps to protect your hair from heat too.
I hope this helps you some! :O)
PS: Use a hotoil conditioner if you notice your hair is getting brittle/fried or noticable split ends. Natural oils in your hair help protect it from heat too and to hold a style longer, so in other words dont wash your hair daily if you are going to straighten it, maybe limit it to 3-4 times a week instead.

Um, as a press n curler for like 21 years, let me tell you this. A perm or relaxer will cause FAR more damage to your hair than a regular press n curl. That said, do yourself a favor and NEVER YOU A STRAIGHTENING COMB YOU HAVE TO HEAT ON A STOVE!!! The tendency there is to get the comb too hot and fry your hair. Pressing your hair can be safe as long as you Wash your hair thoroughly first and use a heavy cream conditioner to moisturize your hair. To protect your hair, blow it out first to detangle it and apply a hair balm (if your cheap bergamot will work, but I like indian hemp too) to your hair. It will lessen the amount of time the straightening comb actually has to spend in your hair. Finally apply an electric straightening comb to small sections of your hair, starting from the top of your hair and slowly pulling through to the end. When your done pressing your hair it certainly doesn't hurt to apply a light oil afterwards before you style it. Trust me, I've had long natural hair all my life; doesn't mean I couldn't straighten it every once in a while.

I am mixed and my hair is naturally curly. My aunt used to straighten it with a mild chemical straightener like 'Just for me' but my hair holds a curl so much that she would have to blow dry it straight.
Now that I am older I use a straightener but in order to get it really straight I can't do the blow drying myself I can't look at the back of my head to get the brush and dryer in the right places. So I have someone at a shop blow it dry for about $10, for special occasions.
Curling irons, and straightening irons can burn anyones hair, you will have split ends you should use like a hot oil treatment(V05) to moisturize at least once a week if you intend to hot iron. If you do get the split ends then your hair Just gets frizzy then you will have frizzy ans curly that kind of mess is not good looking.
Instead try putting curlers (extra large size) in your hair after a shower, use a few drops of gel before putting the curlers in. You will need a few hours to let your hair dry but you will have less curl and your hair has a smoother and shinier texture when dried in curlers.
Celebrate your curls. Noone ever likes their own hair and that is just wrong.

It may not look damaged at first but after successive hair presses, your hair will be damaged and it will take a lot of work to restore its health. I suggest that instead of flat ironing your hair, use an anti-frizz shampoo and products that help to define your curls so you can love them and make them beautiful with no damage!

It does ruin the hair; I have had mine pressed/ironed and I have split ends and dry hair now! Use a shine serum and a finishing cream and make your curls look pretty

yes pressing does damage the hair. If you are old enough I would suggest a relaxer. A mild one for virgin hair. But you should at least be 13 before you get one.

I have curly hair but I straighten it almost always with a chi flat iron. I have been doing it for years, but if I want to ever wear it curly, it is ready to go. It hasn't ruined the curly at all.

if you have natural hair and you want to press it everyone once in a while you should be fine. (AS LONG AS YOU GO TO A PROFESSIONAL OR SOMEONE WHO REALLY KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING) its when you have a relaxer and put added heat on your hair on top of chemicals is what damages it. i wouldn't over do it like every day ,but every couple of days is fine. i have relaxed hair and I put heat to my hair maybe every 2-3 days and my hair is healthy. i guess it would depend on your grade of hair too!
