Diamonds only are traditional for engagement rings. Lately I have been seeing Rubies or Saphires also in engagement ring settings. I think the large diamond between two smaller Saphires look nice. Any thoughts?

If you like it, go for it, its your ring.
Be as unique, or traditional as you'd like!

Here's an interesting bit of trivia for you. Diamonds have only been "the traditional stone" for wedding rings since the 1930s or so. This is when De Beers, the largest diamond miners in the world, started a very slick advertising campaign that included subtle placement in movies. Suddenly all the movies, magazines, and books had engagement rings be diamond only. You know how people love to copy the movies, so the idea spread like wildflower. The current advertisements, such as "how else can two month's salary last forever" and "a diamond is forever" are continuations of this initial marketing campaign.

Before this, engagement rings were made of any and all types of stones and gems. So really, diamond-only rings aren't very traditional.

I think the rings you linked to are great! Don't listen to anyone who gives you any grief for having an engagement ring that isn't just a diamond.

Do what you like. Diamonds are more of an Americanized tradition. Using other stones has been around for quite a while. Princess Diana had a Sapphire surrounded in diamonds and her sister in-law the Duchess of York (Fergie) had an Emerald surrounded in diamonds. My own grandmother had a ruby with pearls and I have a Sapphire with diamonds around it. It really is up to you. You wouldn't let other people pick your clothes or hair so why let them pick your jewelry?

non diamond engagement rings are fine but I am just not personally into the three stone look.

How about a sapphire in the middle with little diamond accents running down both sides of the shank?

Or a princess style saphire ring, a large center sapphire surrounded by little diamond accents?

I have a 3 stone ring except it is 3 diamonds. I had been seriously considering the sapphire, but I figured that diamonds would match everything I wore, whereas sapphires might not.

But maybe that's just me being paranoid.

i might do the different. Set the sapphire between 2 smaller diamonds might seem nicer. That way the colour of the sapphire might take transport of midsection point. Sapphires oftentimes have a very good shade, on the same time as diamonds are greater diffused.

It's gorgeous. I think the Sapphires really does the diamond justice. Just a note of warning though...be sure that your diamond is going to have the most clarity you can afford...otherwise it will look dingy or yellow next to that vibrant blue.

I love sapphires, they are very beautiful. My engagement ring is fire opals, I don't like diamonds at all. You don't have to follow tradition if you don't want to, it's not the law, so do what pleases you.

That is how my cousin's ring is and it is beautiful =) Go for it - the blue really sets off the main stone. The ring is a symbol of eternal love and committment - that is the part of the tradition that really matters. Any stones or metal you choose is all up to you and your taste =)

I love the idea, but I'm biased. My wedding ring has a sapphire and diamonds.
