Volkswagen was actually the first car company to sell a normal production car with fuel injection standard. Now that said some earlier cars did used FI, but they were all sport cars or luxury models, so Volkswagen brought it to the average car buyer in 1968 with their Type 3. The Beetle and Bus went to FI in 1975 to help meet new emission regulations. I only have limited knowledge of water-cooled Volkswagen's, so the post that said 1975 seems to be a good guess, but ask here: http://forums.vwvortex.com/
It's a huge site of water-cooled owners and I'm sure they can provide you with better info and show you pictures of what the two different setups look like if you have no clue about what's under the hood. You may want to include your model in future questions, since it makes it easier to answer questions. Since I'm still not sure what model were talking about. If it's a Beetle\Bus email me and I can tell you want both setups look like. Since while it would have came with FI, it's not uncommon for it to be currently running a carb rather than the FI. Reason being parts are harder to find and not everyone knows how to work on these early systems.

I suggest that you walk your lazy butt out to the car, lift the engine cover, and look at the top of the motor.
If it has one line going into a fuel delivery system, it is a carb, if it has 4 or more individual lines for the fuel delivery, it is injected.

But as above, It will be carbed.
Even the performance cars of that era, had carbs.

The proper question that should have been asked here, is What size carb came stock on the ???cc VW engine.
Thus indicating what is probably there, (but not a guarantee)

could you maybe be a little bit more vague about what your car is? vw made lots of different models of car in 1978, it would be almost as helpful as me saying what type of engine is in my 1993 blue car.
If you go and look at your engine, you will either see 1 or more carbs, or you won't, then you will know.

last carb on vw rabbit was 1975. then they went to FI and diesel. buses had FI but it was such a poor system most of them were changed back to dual carbs. bugs didn't get that new i don't think.

I would be astounded if it were fuel injected. Inexpensive cars in that era came with carburetors.

I'm thinking it has a 2bbl or 4 bbl carb. But go to www.autozone.com and look up your car.
