In many Asian countries, coconut oil (pure) is used as a beauty aid, especially for creating long, glossy locks. Usually, most people apply some to their hair and leave it in for a good hour before washing it out. It's a kind of pre-wash conditioner.
As for making hair grow faster, this comes from the inside. It's down to nutrients and general good health. I have been told that lecithin and silica supplements do wonders for hair growth.

Oil is for Ethnic hair, oil in Caucasian hair will close up the hair follicles.
Use a Vitamin called Biotin, it will help your hair, skin, and nails.
