Yes. Always check consumer reports.
1) How long is the warrenty?
2) How long has the company been around? If it's new, the quality may suffer.
3) The brand DOES matter because different brands will break at different rates. A good TV may last 10 years and a lesser quality TV may only last 5. If you're okay with having a TV last only 5 years, fine. If not go with a better brand.
Basically, research and ask questions. Don't just buy, especially an LCD HD TV. That's a nice TV and I'm sure you wouldn't want to waste money on it.
This is an investment. Treat it like you are buying a car. Would you buy a Kia when you want a Benz?

If the unit meets your specification and passes you visual test, then it all down to price. You might consider power consumption if everything else is equal. But bottom line is do you like the picture.
One comment when viewing the TV before you purchase it. Make sure where the signal is coming from when you are watching the set. Some retailer have them set up to HD DVD's with special enhanced signals, thus showing you something you may not get at home. Try to get them to show you a local broadcast signal or a Satellite/cable signal thus something you can compare if you visit a different store.
Good luck on your purchase
