I am going to start working in Long Beach and need to find a place to live. I use Craigslists to find houses to rent and there are none that suit me in Long Beach so I need to know which other areas I can search and still be within 20min driving to near the airport.
The other areas are
Westside-soutbay/ SF Valley/ Central LA/ San Gabriel Valley/Antelope Valley
are any of those places 20 from the Airport near longbeach?

= You might try a search of Orange county and narrow your search from there.

Constable's suggestions are all excellent... just thought I'd comment on the choices you gave us. Also, "20 minutes" in LA doesn't mean much. It's like the difference between a regular minute, a football minute, and a basketball minute. In some places on the West side, it could take you 20 minutes just to get on the on-ramp of the 405 freeway. Been there, done that. Just realize that the traffic can be BAD here, and knowing the traffic patterns can make all the difference. (BTW, there's a reason they call it the 405: You travel at 4 o' 5 mph, and it takes 4 o' 5 hours to get where you are going)
-Westside: Close to LAX, but a bit of a drive to LB. The main route to get there is the 405.
-South Bay: Further south than the Westside, much closer to LB. Some very nice towns here, but anything with "Beach" in its name will generally cost more to live there.
-SF valley: Some nice places to live, but the drive is murder going through the Sepulveda Pass on the 405. And about 10 degrees warmer than the rest of the area all year round.
-Central LA: Probably don't want to live there, especially if it's South-Central LA. Pretty rough part of town.
-San Gabriel Valley: Once again, nice areas, but way too far for you to get anywhere in 20 minutes, even though you don't have to take the 405. You would have to head through downtown, and you don't want that much traffic. Also about 10 degrees hotter than the rest of L.A.
-Antelope Valley: The 'burbs, with VERY nice places to live, but a 2-hour commute is about average. Lots of people drive in at 4AM just to avoid the traffic. Can be very hot in the summer, and cold in the winter, it's considered "high desert"

Hope this helps,

If you want low crime and to be near the beach, the following area are all within 20 minutes of Long Beach Airport and I would not mind living in any of them:
Torrance
Hermosa Beach,
Redondo Beach
Seal Beach
Huntington Beach
Cerritos, Fullerton, Buena Park, Anaheim
Costa Mesa
Newport Beach (expensive)
San Pedro (used to be bad, but it's getting a lot better)
Palos Verdes, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rollinng Hills (expensive!)
Or go up to Pasadena, Monrovia, Whittier (all 30 minutes away)
SF Valley and Antelope Valley are bad areas and are more than one hour drive each way.

If you are looking for rental property in the Long Beach, California area, may I suggest that you might find the classified section of the Long Beach Press-Telegram newspaper more productive than Craigslist. The newspaper will list rentals within the area you are interested in. Its website is "presstelegram.com"
Of those areas you listed, the only ones remotely within 20 minutes of Long Beach is Central L A (slummy) and the Southbay.

Only one answer got it right... WHICH AIRPORT? Why does everyone automatically assume LAX?

Do we forget that LONG BEACH (LGB) has an airport as well? What if asker was wondering about areas within 20 minutes of LGB? That's way different area than LAX.

The other major airports in the greater LA area are Orange County (SNA), Burbank (BUR), and Ontario (ONT).

EDIT - Why would Asker narrow their search to Orange County when Long Beach is in LA County?

LAX would be the Westside-Southbay.
Long Beach is kind of close to the Westside-Southbay.

I would switch Craigslist and look at Orange County (orangeco on Craigslist)

Which Airport???? They are all over metro L.A. You need to be there and get to know the good and bad areas of town before you make long term leasing decisions....Any of constables recomendations are good if you are talking about the Long Beach Airport and not LAX.

Look at Manhattan Beach to the north, Huntington Beach to the south. Beware of the towns north of Long Beach.

Long beach CA is far away from the airport. I think it is about a 45 min - 1 hr drive or so, IF the traffic is good. Closest areas are Compton, Rancho Palo Verdes, Carson

Look here, excellent map:
