I respond on this site because several of the questions are not about religion but about misunderstandings of topics that have been clarified in the worlds of science and math. Many people who I respond to have improperly given religious explanations for something science has proven to be natural phenomenon. It would be like someone telling you that your car engine is powered by angels who use angel juice, and that the gas pump is a gateway to heaven. You would think that is ridiculous if you knew just the basics of a 4 stroke engine. Would you try to straighten that individual out?
I happen to have quite a bit of experience with the calculation of probability, physical laws and genetics, and these happen to be the categories that many incorrect religious explanations fall into. Consider the effectiveness of prayer, if 10 people are given a 1 in 10 chance of survival for some horrendous disease and 8 of them pray, the chances are pretty good that the 1 who survived will have prayed. Does this mean that prayer worked? No, it means that a good percentage of the population that was sick had also prayed. So the chance that the 1 person who survived had also prayed was very good. The only way this could have demonstrated that God answers prayers are if the odds were significantly beaten, I would say 4 or greater of the diseased that prayed also survived. Entropy is likewise misunderstood. While entropy relates to the dispersal of energy in a closed system, in an open system entropy tends to drive the formation of complexity. For 30 years scientists have been modeling naturally occurring phenomenon that form this complexity with no intelligent hand. Consider the formation of complex crystals, snowflakes and other complex molecules. Complexity does not require any kinds of intelligence. Related to this, genetics is the biggest and most misunderstood bone of contention in the evolution vs. creationism debate. Many creationists, and quite a few evolutionists here, don’t seem to understand the link between genes and the evolutionary process. After Watson and Crick discovered DNA, Darwin became old hat because genes were shown to be the drivers of evolution. Dawkins explained that evolution is directed and specific because it is a process involving the replication of genetic information. This had several implications for our understanding of biology from taxonomy to human psychology. Despite this, most arguments people make regarding creationism are the same one’s made back in the 1800’s – arguments proven false time and again.
This misunderstanding seems to happen because science and math are difficult subjects and statistics indicate they are not taught well in the US. I would say that most of the people touting religious explanations don’t have a firm grasps in these areas. Many of them don’t have a grasp on basic logic, such as why one can’t prove a negative. This lack of proper understanding is detrimental to their own judgment and society in general. Such inability is the reason why societies collapse to dictatorial rule or are overrun by religious extremeist from a Parliamentary and Congressional systems that require reason and debate. It is the reason that science is good at finding cures for disease, provides medical solutions to recurrent human problems, and develops technical solutions to the challenges of human living, while religion can do none of these things. Some of the basic scientific beliefs that most people in the world hold today would have been considered heresy just a few hundred years ago, but science and reason persisted. One could say debating religion is an attempt to stop a fall back to a time when we thought disease was caused by demons and the Earth was the center of the Universe. The religious extremists have clearly shown that such a fall back is possible.

I was not aware that believing in God was a requirement to ask or answer questions here? You are trying to paint everyone with a broad brush and you can't. I have no doubt it IS a cry for help for SOME. Some truly believe they are "saving" everyone else from the "Christian mindset". Some (like me) believe in God but do not like most religions and do not think "Holy Scriptures" exist. I just answer questions I'm interested in as best I can, and I suggest you do the same, that's what this site is for. Not to "Save" people.

Don't you think is petulant to think others don't believe in God just because they don't share your particular view on the subject?
I believe is very healthy that people share they view on religion or theirs particular believes with others, had this been the case from the beginning many wars death and miseries would've been avoided.
I don't accept any past and present religious point of view of god. God is a matter of opinion and one is as good as the next one, I have my own and I love to argue the subject, I want to know what makes believers tic.
Instead of complaining I like to hear you talk about the nature of your god and why you believe in him.
You don't have to belong to a religion to be an spiritual person, you can have any religious believe you want and still not be spiritual. Spirituality has nothing to do with religions as we know them today, if you think I'm wrong I'd like to hear your arguement.

Spirituality is not exlusive to religion or believing in god. You should study up some.
As an atheist, my interest in this section of Y!A is to read, learn and educate. It's also to mock ignorance such as yours.
Many atheists came from a religious background and many I've seen here answer questions to educate and elighten.
One other thing, this is the RELIGION AND SPIRITUALITY section, yes. It doesn't say CHRISTIANITY AND JESUS. So, did you come here because you believe in Zeus, Buddha (not a god, but for the purposes of this "argument"), Vishnu or any of the other thousands of deities available?

It is a great learning experience to see the level of hatred some express, or to see how some paint all Christians as extremists.
Amazing! A year ago I would have said that I didn’t have an enemy in the world. Now I realize there are many who would like to lock me up or dispose of me entirely simply because of my Faith.
I mean I have read those opinions on here concerning ALL Christians within the past few minutes and noting the number of thumbs up I gather it is a popular sentiment.

Or maybe we're just trying to clear up a few misconceptions about atheism and secularism. In a country where the religious increasingly hold sway over our daily lives, why shouldn't we speak out?
And, no. It's not a cry for help. That's a very arrogant assumption and one of the reasons I'm here. I grow weary of being browbeaten by the religious and I have every right, even a duty, to speak out in defense of what I believe. If you don't want to read it, don't. But I'm going to keep talking.

As a "Christian", it should delight you that atheists and agnostics, and, well everyone else who has a different belief than you, come to this site. If I were you, I would use it as an opportunity to convert, or "save", if you will, and not worry about the whys. Oh, and BTW, you must not be paying attention to the Christian answers, because some of them are just a rude, if not more so. Don't point us out as a group and slap our hands, when your group is doing the very same thing. He without sin........

To start with, I clicked on the "society and culture" tab. But given that all these righteous religious types are so "in your face" its good to be able to challenge their views. None of this God crap stands up to logical and reasoned argument. If you believe in something thats just fine, just dont expect the rest of us to agree with you, and if you just look at all the misery and suffering that goes on in this world then if there is a god its one mean son of a ***** who clearly rejoices in pain and suffering.

The full name of this section is "Society & Culture > Religion & Spirituality". I am here because of the effect that Religion has on society and culture, especially due to the effect that fundamentalist christians have had on U.S. politics, society & culture in the last decade.

Most people who do not believe in God have arrived at that point of view b analyzing the facts and evidence. They are not closed minded and would consider believing in God if evidence were presented that he existed. In sprite of what you guys say, many agnostics are optimist and would love to log on to this site and see the irrefutable proof. So far that has not happened. We just get told that we are going to hell.
