I had braces when I was a kid and I worked in an orthodontic office in operatory for 2 yrs. Not to scare you, but yes it does hurt. They can be painful at times, especially after you change wires. The process goes something like this.... You go in and take impressions of your teeth. On another visit you get bands fitted onto your molars. This is a metal ring that fits around your tooth. It has two holes in it for the wire to be placed in later. The girls in the office usually do this. Then the orthodontist will come and put your brackets(braces) on. They are glued on. A wire is then placed into the holes on you bands which have already been cemented on by this time. The wire is then tied in with ligatures so that it will stay in place and move your teeth. When you come for your appointments every two to four weeks, your wire will be changed and tightened. Sometimes brackets will need to be repositioned to move the tooth in a different direction. Towards the end of your treatment you will start to wear rubber bands. This alignes your bite. The more you wear them the faster you will get your braces off. So wear them! People wear braces anywhere from a year to 3 or 4 yrs, depending on how severe the case. Different orthodontists do different things. This is how we did things in our office. Hope this helps. And remember, its worth everything you've gone through in the end!

had four teeth extracted when I got my braces, but they did it in two seperate appointments. The first appointment was bad but the second appointment I knew what to expect and it wasn't as bad. Don't get me wrong, getting teeth pulled is no picnic but they used Novocain. Maybe they would use some nitrous oxide on you that would help you relax. As far as getting the braces themselves on, I don't think it was that bad. The most discomfort I had was from my lips being stretched out. I got them when I was a senior in high school. They were on two and a half years. The more cooperative you are with the orthodontist, like wearing the rubber bands when you are supposed to, the less time you'll be wearing the braces.
For the process:
They give you a pill you are supposed to take before coming in the minimize the amount of saliva in your mouth. Then they clean your teeth really good. They attach the brackets on each tooth with special bonding agent, then put a special type of light on each tooth to activate the bonding agent. Then they put in the wires and trim if they need to. It takes a little while but it doesn't hurt. You will probably get bored. The younger you are when you get braces the less time you have to wear them depending on you problem overbite or underbite.

The time involved depends upon what needs to be corrected. Some people need to have teeth extracted, others do not.

The orthodontist will make a cast ("impressions") of your mouth before and after the braces. After that, four arch bands are cemented onto your back molars. An arch wire is placed, one on the top, and one on the bottom. Then, each tooth is wrapped with wire and attached to the next. This is done all around your mouth, then cut down to a short wire.

In a few weeks, you will return and do it all over again, except that the arch wire usually stays in place longer.

Mine took one year before they came off. It is extremely important that you wear your retainer religiously!!!

Yes, it hurt a little, but was well worth it. Now I smile all the time!

Best wishes.

Braces...

Yes, they are uncomfortable. The tightening is what hurts the most.

They put glue on your teeth and attach metal to your teeth, then string wire and/or rubber bands through the metal and tighten them.

How long you wear them depends on how much work needs to be done. If you're just correcting an overbite, might take a little over a year. If it's extensive, you might have them on for two years, maybe even longer. It varies by your case and your orthodontist too.

well the process doesnt really hurt, the pain after you have them does. it makes you sore, the only thing you can eat is pretty much soup, which still hurts a whole bumhc. the process is they put these things in your teeth to widen them to put this ring like metal on your teeth. from there you get the brackets placed on your teeth. its way too much to explain. you hsould try googling it or yahooing it. lol. the process is a little lone, minimum time im guessing is an hour. for me, it took me 2 years, but most people it may take up to 3 or even 4.

ok, so i had braces...the process of putting them on is unpainful, but after a while like a day, they start to hurt cuz your teeth are starting to move. the process is, they put this seperater thing in your mouth to keep your tongue outta the way. then they put this cement glue on your teeth and place the brackets on. then they use this laser thing to heat and dry the cement. then they place the wire on over the bracket, and use these rubber bands to keep the wire in place. i think that the normal time is 18-24 months. but then again it depends on the condition of your teeth. and every other 6 weeks or so, they adjust the wire at the rate your teeth are moving. Hope this helps!

They hurt for a little while. What they have to do is use this special glue and glue the brackets on and run a wire through all of them. The amount of time varies, it depends on how crooked your teeth are.

hurts for a couple of days when you get the wires tightened but you get used to it, the process is pretty simple, you have appointments like once a month, it usually takes about two years to get them off, you might have to wear headgear or rubberbands, but its not the worst thing, the perfect smile is worth it
