I, personally, would either go to family services and inquire if they know of a needy family with children and I would buy gifts for the children. I would also consider going to a local nursing home and speaking to the administrator to see if I could donate some gifts for some of the elderly patients. So many people look for an easy way to give and there is nothing wrong with that of course but just thing of the gratification in helping someone nearby smile.

I do donate to charities now. I donate to the United Way in my area because they look at charities very stringently and make sure they are responsibly handling their money. I donate to my local rape crisis centre to assist people going through that horrible ordeal. I support Amnesty International with my dollars and time because I believe strongly in human rights. Finally, I give food to our local food bank (may be called food pantry in other areas) because I hate the thought of others going hungry. I can only modestly donate, but I do like to support these organizations. And I know there are many more!

I disagree with most charities.
If charities did not exist, Government would tackle the issue - and would handle it MUCH better. However the Government now rely on their existance and so do not include tackling poverty etc. on their list of "things to do" as it were.
