I think you are totally reasonaable to keep it in a box if you like. You not even flaunting her picture, much less displaying it--which would signify to an even greater degree what meaning you hold for this picture or your ex.
And, clearly, your ex is not trying to get you back, calling you, sending you notes, etc., so your current has no cause to be jealous and even less reason for trying to be controlling of you or what you do with this photo.
Keep it as you have been. If she brings it up again or tries to get more pushy about it, ask her what HER problem is? Why does SHE feel threatened?
Oh, and tell her to keep the hell out of your stuff, especially if that photo bothers her. You have a right to some minimal level of privacy.

No dont throw out, that is a part of your life and your past, this person is truly insecure and needs to get a grip, If you have a loving relationship she should not worry and if she is maybe this might not be the person you want to stay with. Your past cant change your feeling for her only make them stronger, this other erson is an x for a reason and that is what you should tell her. Keep your past dreams and memories cuz when you get older they will give you much warmth and fondness

I would talk with my current girlfriend and let her know that there is no reason to be jealous or envious at all and that I was just keeping it for memories. Sad fact of life is that current girlfriend will probably not be there forever either and you'll have pics of her that you may want to keep also. Tell her to keep an open mind and that you are keeping them, but in a nice mature way. Best of luck.

If she is just a girlfriend, I do not see any reason why you need to get rid of the photo. It sounds like your girlfriend is a bit insecure. If the picture offends her, just leave it at your parent's place or something. I would caution against disposing of pictures unless you are engaged or married.
