NORMALLY BELOW THE ARMREST SO U ARE NOT BANGING YOUR ELBOW

Most are built to fit below the arm of the sofa.

It's realy a matter of personal preference. Much of it depends on the precise decorum of the room. For example, if you are going for a more Victorian look, you might want to go with a higher end table.
