I just bought a new 07' mazda and it's the first manual I've owned. I wanted to know if it was possible to accidently shift it from 5th to reverse. I've heard that some cars have safety features to prevent this from happening.

It can NOT be put into reverse while moving forward (especially in 5th gear) with out extreme grinding and pressure. Even with the clutch fully depressed. The gears are moving in a different direction, you would know instantly if you did this just by the sound of the gears meshing before they were even close to being engaged.

I assume you mean downshifting from 5th to 4th and are afraid you would hit reverse instead. There is a detent that the gear handle needs pressure to go past in order to go into reverse. Give it a few weeks of driving and you will be more than confident that this will not happen.

Don't worry about this :)

Just test it ... drive at a low speed in 2. gear and gently try to put it in reverse :)

U will see what it feels like :)

Don't worry. I'm not trying to make you do something that will damage your car.

Just do it extra gently if you are afraid of damaging something :)

Hope it will put some ease to your mind :)

With a great deal of difficulty and even greater noise. I don't think you would go backwards but you might come to a sudden halt.

Have they sent you to shops, for some "sparks for the grinder"? Or instructed you to pass and get "the long weight/wait interior the nook?" they are pulling your leg, having you on, yanking your chain. in case you do what they say, you will not stay to tell the story!

While you are moving... It "can" be done, but you would know that it is not right before you let go of the clutch.

It is nothing to worry about
