The way I do them is:
First wash them real good. Leave the peel. Then slice them into little circles. Put them in foil. Coat the foil with olive oil so they don't stick. Put butter or margarine on top so they melt over them when cooking. Season as desired. Put in a casserole dish so the oil and butter doesn't spill out of the foil and onto your oven. Bake until soft. (you can also add onion for flavor). (this can also be done on a grill, minus the casserole dish... has to be watched closely so they don't burn and get all charred.)

You can bake them:
Scrub potatoes
Pierce with a fork a few times
pop in a preheated 450 degree oven until soft.
You can mash them
Peel potatoes
cut in chunks
place in boiling water until fork tender
Drain off liquid
Mash with potato masher
add salt to taste
butter about 1/2 stick or more depending on your taste
cream
keep mashing until smooth, (or you can leave slightly chunky)
add a dash of onion powder
add a dash of garlic powder
some chopped parsley or even dried parsley flakes
You can make French Fries
scrub potatoes
peel or you can even leave skin on
cut in half then cut in to strips
place in hot oil
fry until golden brown and crispy

Boil, fry, bake, steam. Any way you want. It depends on what you want to do with them. French Fries? Baked Potato? Riced Potatoes? Duchess Potatoes? Mashed Potatoes? Potato Soup? (I haven't met a potato I didn't like.)

Any number of ways! Here are a few:
Mashed potatoes: Peel them, boil them in water until they are soft. Add butter and milk and mashed them or use your mixer!
Baked potatoes: Leave on the skin. Wrap it in saran wrap. Cook in the microwave for around 7 minutes.
Traditional baked potatoes. Wrap in tin foil and put them in the oven for about 30 minutes. Add sour cream, butter, chives, bacon bits, or whatever you want!
Fried: Peel them, and cut into small peices or grate them. Fry them in a pan with butter until they are soft.
Raw: Peel, cut and add salt! Yum!!!

Potatoes can be cooked in many ways, and it would depend on what tyoe you like. I personally like making them into roasted potatoes and they are good to taste and dont get heavy. They are lightly salted.

Erica, potatoes are usually a complimentary side dish to go along with your main course. First, ask yourself, what do I want to make for the particular meal in question.
Say I want a good breakfast with scrambled eggs and sausages- fried mashed potatoes would compliment this nicely. Or, how about mixing in some spinach with the potatoes- sometimes "slangly" referred to as bubble and squeak. Hash browns are another form too. You want to cook them with vegetable oil or butter (my favourite for flavour) at roughly medium in a frying pan for about 10-20 minutes, depending on how powerful your stove element is- cook until golden brown.
What about dinner? You could do a very quick basic potato in the microwave for roughly 8 minutes (6 for smaller up to 10 for larger potatoes) and slice it in half, mash it up a bit and top with bacon bits, chives, sour cream, butter, etc... Or you could bake the same potato in an oven for about an hour at 325 degrees Fahrenheit. I sometimes bake my potatos first and then cut them open at the top and use a spoon to scoop out the inside and put i into a bowl where I mash it up with everything I like to stick on a potatoe (garlic, butter, chives, bacon bits, sour cream, basil, parsley, etc...) and then pour some virgin olive oil on top and shred cheddar cheese over this and then stick it back in to oven for 20-30 more minutes (leaned this from Food Network Canada).
With fish dishes, like salmon, you could make scallop potatoes with onions, mushrooms, seasoning salt and pepper, butter and milk placed into an oven until a light golden brown colour forms on the surface.
Potatoes are such a common dish, I cannot list them all here for you!
How about diced potatoes with peppers, onions, corn, butter, garlic, and seasoning salt and pepper wrapped up in tin foil over a grill or barbecue for 20 minutes to go with a nice steak and lobster dinner!

There are literally HUNDREDS of ways to cook potatoes - you can steam them, boil them (and leave them whole or mashed), bake them, broil them, microwave them, fry them....just about anything. Were you looking for something specific?
