Well I guess that depends on how long you've been going out. I would suggest maybe a necklace, bracelet, earrings those are typical things that girls like, but you don't have to break the bank you can find something between 20-40 (or more of course) if you are on a budget. Just think of the colors that you most often see her and pick something YOU like and make sure she knows that its something you would like to see on her.
Most girls want something tangible something that they can pull out in five years and smile about.

It means you better start paying attention to her likes and dislikes or your going to mess up the Christmas present. Sounds like she is testing you, just ask someone who knows her for some ideas. Jewelry is always a good bet. How long have you two been together? Don't sound like that long, so judge the price accordingly. I watch so many guys get burned buying expensive gifts only to get dumped right after Christmas. Good Luck.

she probably wants you to get her something that reminds her of you. something that you guys share or a hobby that she enjoys doing with you. maybe her favorite cd.. or mix cds and love letters are always sweet.. but if you have the expenses maybe a nice dinner out, surprise her with a sweet gift like something that is her hobby, then spend the rest of the night together.. she'll remember it, and remember the little things always count!

Meaning that she doesn't want to sound like you should go out of your way to get her something special, but you should anyway because girls like when you surprise them with something that they like that isn't quite an average everyday present. Something special and unique!
Or just get her something she likes.
