You need to be able to drive in Southern California. Our public transporation is HORRIBLE and slow. Everything is very spread out, so it just isn't economical, although it is possible to use public transportation.

Liz:
Public transportation in the metropolitin areas is fairly good, ranging from trains and subways to busses and private car pools.
In the smaller cities there is generally no formal transportation system and it is generally a shared affair (car pools, ride sharing etc..(.
California is not like the east coast. You will pretty much need to have a license because, since it is a big state, there is a lot of diversity (beaches, mountains, desert, towns, big cities, etc..). Almost everyone at one time or another will journey between them. Having a car and a license is really the only solution.
On the flip side.. learning to drive is pretty easy..

If you live in a major city in North Cali, the public transportation is fairly decent, however it's always nice to have a car instead of sitting next to some tweaker on the bus at eleven o'clock at night.
South California is a different story. You definitely need to drive if you're in Southern California. The public transportation there is horrendous.

It depends on what city you live in. Most larger cities in California have regular buses running that are fairly quick and cheap.

I live in Westminster, Orange County and OCTA was voted the best bus transport system in the country. I never rode on a OCTA bus, but I think its $0.75 per adult. I would prefer to have car if you ask me.
