It's pretty amazing the amount of confusion that abounds in the minds of the general public in regard to the legalities of owning Class 3 firearms and suppressors, more correctly known as weapons registered under the National Firearms Act of 1934(NFA).

First off, you must live in a state that allows you to own NFA registered firearms and suppressors.

You DO NOT need a Federal Firearms License to own NFA weapons in most states, there are a couple of states that require a Curio & Relics FFL to legally own NFA weapons.

You must fill out what is known as a Form 4 and have it signed by the Chief Law Enforcement Officer (CLEO) of the city or county you reside in. His signature merely certifies that he knows of no state or local laws that prohibit the ownership of the weapon and that he knows of no legal reason that you personally can not own the weapon. You must also send in a fingerprint card and a Citizenship Certification form along with a check for the $200 transfer fee. This is a one time only fee and DOES NOT need to be renewed every 2 yrs. as someone above has stated.

After your paperwork has been reviewed and you have passed a routine background done, you will receive an approved Form 4 back in 2-6 months at which time you may take possession of your machine gun.

I even have a number of NFA weapons offered on a style 4. You pay the $two hundred flow tax one time each and every time you purchase a weapon. Remeber, that's a tax on the flow of an NFA weapon so the tax is paid each and every time there's a flow of possession. The CLEO (chief regulation Enforcement Officer) signature is for the acquisition of the weapon on that style. that's solid for as long as you own that distinctive weapon and could't be revoked. the only way you could lose the gun is that in case you grow to be no longer able to legally own a firearm or in case you progression to a state that prohibits NFA weapons. in case you're moving to any such state, you merely sell the weapon in the previous you progression.

well to quickly answer your first question you need extensive background check and a lot of money. it has to be renewed every two years. and a nfa is the national firearm association and ffl is a federal firearms licenses.
