gargle with warm water(as warm as you can handle comfortably) and cornstarch. You have to mix the cornstarch into a paste with cold water first or it will be lumpy. Then add hot water. Use about one to two teaspoons to one cup water. Continue to gargle and spit till you use up the mixture. Repeat when your throat gets sore again. This may happen often in the beginning but it will heal quickly.
Why this works.
Your throat is sore because there is a film of mucous that is irritating it. Salt water helps but the cornstarch will bind to the mucous (kind of like making gravy the cornstarch binds with the fat) and you can spit it out with the solution thus enabling faster heal time.

Absolutely the BEST thing is to take Zycam when you first start feeling it coming on. That stuff is like liquid gold and does exactly what it says - shortens the cold and makes it less severe. Once you have the sore throat, however, the best treatment is to get about 1/2 cup of warm water (as hot as coffee maybe) and dissolve about 1-2 teaspoons of salt into it. Gargle with that every hour or so. It tastes nasty but it works. You can also mix a little baking soda with it and it may actually help to cure the cold. Do not start drinking orange juice if you have not been. Colds thrive on acid, so if you start juicing it up, your cold will just get worse. If you're used to a lot of vitamin C, then you're less likely to get a cold, but you shouldn't start when you start feeling ill. The reason the baking soda works is that it is not acidic but alkaline and it does the opposite of the orange juice. Colds don't like alkalinity. You can also mix a little baking soda with some water and drink it at the first sign of a cold and it will stop it. That worked for me about 1/2 the time, but since I found Zycam I will only us it and it works all the time.

I know exactly what you mean about that orange juice.
Try gargling with salt water - for as long as you can stand it. A teaspoon full of salt stirred in a glass of hot-cool water gargled straight for almost an hour will cure it.

Orange juice? Never heard of that for a sore throat...maybe to prevent one. I'd drink tea...I always do.

Gargle with a mild solution of salt and water. The water shouldn't be cold.
Sometimes, a lemonade made with fresh lemons, honey, and hot water feels good too.

Gargle with lukewarm salt water. Put enough salt in the water so it tastes like sea water. Not pleasant, but your throat will feel alot better.
