A qualified yes. Lexapro is technically an antidepressant, however it is also approved to treat certain forms of anxiety (if that is what you mean by "nerves"). Essentially, all of the SSRI antidepressants are also believed to treat anxiety. However, it does not correct a problem in the brain. It treats a symptom like giving you morphine for a broken leg. You still need to heal the leg to address the underlying cause. Same thing here. The Lexapro may help manage your symptoms enough so that you are in a better emotional state to do the necessary work to address the underlying causes of your anxiety.

These might include things like, limited stress management skills, coping skills, support system, or recent life stressors.

Here is some information from the maker of Lexapro:

If you have already been prescribed Lexapro® (escitalopram oxalate), you have taken an important first step toward improving your generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Now you may be wondering what to expect from treatment with Lexapro and what you can do to get the best results.

What is the most important information I should know about escitalopram?

You should not use this medicine if you also take pimozide, or if you are being treated with methylene blue injection.
Do not use escitalopram if you have taken an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. A dangerous drug interaction could occur. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, and tranylcypromine.
Some young people have thoughts about suicide when first taking an antidepressant. Your doctor will need to check your progress at regular visits while you are using vilazodone. Your family or other caregivers should also be alert to changes in your mood or symptoms.
Do not give this medicine to anyone under 12 years.

No, it restores Brain chemical imbalance like boosting levels of Serotonin (one of the main messengers in the Brain. But it helps Anxiety and Depression symptoms so in a way yes it does calm, it fixes the Serotonin which causes the symptoms according to research. Some people do not believe in that theory. Well I hoped I helped you answer your question, good luck! :)

My doctor put me on it because I was breaking out in hives whenever I would get the slightest bit of stress (we're talking making the grocery list would make me break out.) I took it for about a week and it made me nausious which made me think I was pregnate which made me break out more.

If it works or not? I don't know, I just used clariton for the hives instead BUT:

Don't take it on an empty stomcah!
