Just wanted to say that we believe that Jesus Christ was the Son of God, and the Atonement is the most important event to ever happen in history. There are some break-away groups who might qualify as cults, especially if they do not allow their members to read and have contact with outside people. I have lived in 3 states and gone to 2 universities. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is not a cult. We use both the Bible and the Book of Mormon to testify that Jesus Christ is the Savior of mankind. That may mean we have two legs to stand on instead of just one. Have a happy day, and I send you a gummy bear.

Every religion starts as a cult. If a large portion of the US were scientologists then it would no longer be considered a cult. A cult is simply a religion that the vast majority of people don't agree with. It's a way of insulting religions that you deem false. To an Atheist, every religion is a cult.

No, cults as a rule follow a living human being and deify him. Mormons basically believe in a sort of eastern philosophy that we are all miniature gods and the God of Abraham is the chief god. It is a religion, though polytheistic.

With 13 million individuals global, Mormonism is a faith and with techniques from that definition and the definition of Merriam-Webster also a cult.

In religion and sociology, a cult is a cohesive group of people (sometimes a relatively small and recently founded religious movement, sometimes numbering in the hundreds of thousands) devoted to beliefs or practices that the surrounding culture or society considers to be far outside the mainstream. Its separate status may come about either due to its novel belief system, because of its idiosyncratic practices or because it opposes the interests of the mainstream culture. Other non-religious groups may also display cult-like characteristics.

The LDS church is not a cult. Regardless of what your preacher tells you.

Actually all religions are cults by their definition.

Just that some have attached a negative phrasing to the word and now they try to avoid it.

all religions are cults. Faith in Christ and what He did at the cross has NOTHING to do with religion. Religions are man-made cults.
