The sleep aid may actually be contributing significantly to your problem. You didn't say which drug you were taking -- if you add that information, I can check to see if fatigue or lethargy is a side effect (or you can, by going to rxlist.com and searching for the medication's name then clicking on the tab for "side effects").
But more importantly, it sounds like you may suffer from depression or anxiety, or both. Those two disorders, often caused by chemical imbalances in your brain, can not only cause your feelings of tiredness and lack of energy, but could be the root causes of your insomnia as well.
I'd encourage you to see a doctor about this and detail your history of insomnia. Describe your current feelings of tiredness and lethargy and any other emotional or physical symptoms you may have noticed. There are dozens of effective medications for depression and anxiety, though sometimes it takes a few tries to find the right one. Once you DO find the right one, though, your entire life can change for the better. And wouldn't that be nice?
Good luck, Tony! Hang in there!

Wow, taking sleep aids for that long will do many negative things. I suggest you get a full examination and tell your doctor about the sleep aids.
How is your diet? Do you eat healthy and drink lots of water? Do you limit alcohol and fats? Do you get regular exercise? I would guess maybe not, right?
Time to look into why you can't sleep too. You can get into a vicious cycle taking pills to sleep and that is not good at all. Insomnia happens for different reasons and can be handled without pills.
Get off the couch and change your life for the better. You can do this!

you need to get off the sleep aids..you sound like you may be addicted to them now..after 3 years..are you overweight? do you eat properly? you need to try and push yourself to get off the couch and at least go for a walk around the block or something..if you cant do this, then perhaps you need to see your doctor about helping you get off the drugs..they arent good for you..

You may have depression, or a Vitamin B deficiency. Only a doctor can properly advise you. You need to start moving, even if you have to force yourself, for the good of your heart and circulation.
