Probably nothing. You might be wearing shoes that don't fit properly and cause the nail to "lift" and injure the nailbed. you may have also dropped something on your foot to injure the nailbed. All in all, nails fall of because of some sort of foot trauma, such as wearing running shoes that are too small, or having nails that are too long and press up against the toe of your shoes. nails should always be trimmed short - no white showing, and straight across to prevent ingrown nails. If you nail has turned yellow, you may have a fungal infection, in which case you should see a doctor.

you just may have an infection in that nail..i have one on my big left toe, the nail got hard, then cracked, and fell off..it has grown back some..if your concerned about it, go to your doctor..i didnt but my nail never hurt, its just ugly..
