Hard to tell as there are many reasons why a tattoo can fade.
Here are some of them:
- Bad aftercare
- Neglected aftercare
- Scab picking while it's healing
- Scratching while it's healing (instead of scratching becuase we all know how damn itchy it gets, one of my tattoo artists told me to slap your tattoo, this worked really well for me)
- Using too much lotion or polysporine (whatever you used, could have been Tattoo Goo) when it's healing
- Low quality ink
- The tattoo artist may not have gone deep enough with the needle
- The tattoo artist may have gone too deep with the needle.
- The location of the tattoo. Hands, feet and inside the lip tattoos normally do not stay very good if at all as your hands or feet get sweaty or clamy & the inside of your lip is wet. Moisture is bad for a tattoo.
- Too much sun exposure can cause fading as it "bleeches" your tattoo. Always use sunblock (if not for your skin at least for your tattoo)
Well that's all I can think of right now. I would suggest going back to where you got your tattoo done and show them what it looks like and suggest a touch up or just getting it re-done. Alot of places provide free touch up's.
Hope this helped!

most tattoo artists offer a re inking after 6 months or a year. Your body can metabolize a small amount of the ink so that is part of why the color fades, as well it's hard to tell when first doing it if there is enough color to last the test of time

It could be a cheap ink or a watered down ink.

yeah, it does soak in your skin all tattoos fade from when you first get them. If you go out in the sun and do not put on UV protection it will fade.

along with the other answers one probable cause could be sunlight if you didn't put on sunblock over the summer it can fade. I have a tatoo on my back and the part that extends over my shoulder that is exposed when wearing tank tops is lighter than the rest

Where did you get the tattoo? If it was on foot, the tattoo will definitely fade.
