Gastropods (seashells), bivalves (clam shells), and corals are formed from calcium, and diatoms, one of the most abundant types of algae in the ocean, have shells formed of silica. The shells fall to the bottom of the ocean when the organisms die, causing thick deposits of the minerals to build up.
