I am Indonesian born Chinese. When I entered year 10, I had been studying English for 3 years. But I found it difficult to speak and write. My knowlege of English was very minimal. Then I decided to limprove it by reading and keeping a note book, and small cards for new words in my pocket where ever I go. In one year I read 200 books and always wrote down any word that I did know and looked it up in the dictionary, on the small cards. Every time I had to wait, I took out the cards, and try to memorize the words on it. Before I slept I review again and jot down the most difficult ones to remember in my notebook.
When I read the first 50 books, it took me almost six months because there are so many new words that I have to consult my dictionary everytime for their meaning. But the next 150 books took me only 6 months to finish reading. By the end of the year, my knowledge of English was so fantastic, that I was given a credit for English subjects. That means I could skip 2 years of English subjects in secondary level, and took College subjects instead. Even in those College level classes, I always came at the top of my class. They nicknamed me "walking dictionary" because I could answer almost any question about English language, especially when it had something to do with meanings.
My conclusion is, reading a lot of books, and magazines, and keeping a notebook and flash cards to jot down the meaning of the words you study, is the best way for me. Listening to to radio or watching TV in English if you have the time is also very helpful.

Try to gain support from people around you. If you don't try to initialise yourself then there is no point of just talking bout it. People always says that practice makes perfect, therefore try to get all sources which is available free around you. Try to pause and ffocus on people around you, see and hear how they communicates and corresponses to each other. Since you needed to correspond in English at work try to use English as much as possible, then you will not be left out in it.

Honestly I'm a Chinese myself but had never even for once talk in Chinese to people around me even thou they are all Chinese, exept for business associates, it's very important to deliver message which is understandable by both parties no matter in what forms it is.
