Yes, swearing is a sin. Matthew 15:11(paraphrasing, read it for yourself) ....not what goes in the mouth, but what comes out defiles a man. Wouldn't swearing be an "outburst of wrath" Galatians 5 says that those who practice adultery, lewdness, uncleanness, hatred, outburst of wrath, drunkenness, etc. will not inherit the Kingdom of God. Read Psalm 39:1, Psalm 34:13, Proverbs 10:31, James 1:26, James 3:6, Matthew 12:36, Titus 1:10. You will be accountable for every idle word you speak. Matt 12:37 Jesus says"by your words you will be justified, by your words you will be condemned" Read James chapter 3, the mouth can't produce fresh water and bitter water at the same time.

It is definitely a sin to swear (curse, cuss, etc.). The Bible makes this abundantly clear. Ephesians 4:29 tells us, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." 1 Peter 3:10 declares, "For, Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech." James 3:9-12 summarizes the issue, "With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water."
Why is it a sin to cuss / swear / curse? We should only allow good and positive things to come out of our mouths - things that will encourage other people (Ephesians 4:29). It is not right for praising and cursing to come out of the same mouth (James 3:9-12).

Probably, but everyone does it!
There are numerous Biblical refs to swearing, but the translation may be faulty. Perhaps at the time swearing meant more like an oath where you would swear to, say, sacrifice someone if something did not occur.

It's not neccessarily a sin, but it is frowned upon. I think it was Jesus who said that swearing is a bad habit, and that if we become used to swearing around our friends, eventually we are bound to use it in a bad situation (ie in front of a boss at work). So yes and no, but not really, its just suggested not to do so.

Yes it's a sin. It's in the bible where ever it says "curse not". I can't look it up right now because my books are packed away.

"But now you must also get rid of anger, wrath, malice, slander, obscene language from your mouth, and all such sins." (Colossians 3:8)
"With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in God's likeness. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. It should not be like this, my brothers! A spring cannot pour both fresh and brackish water from the same opening, can it?" (James 3:9-11)

******************************************
Swearing is not a sin in the sense of 'thou shall not swear'.
But swearing, in accordance with God, does not build anybody or anything up, meaning; It doesn't have a positive connotation when speaking of somebody or something. We are to mind our tongues. That is in the bible. If our words do not glorify God and do not elevate the subject in a positive way, then it is not appropriate.
Hope this helps.

Well... yes but no.
Matthew 15:11
What goes into a man's mouth does not make him 'unclean,' but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him 'unclean.' "
James 3:10
Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.
Proverbs 10:31
The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but a perverse tongue will be cut out.
Matthew 12:31
And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven

of course it is. the bible doesn't have to list every act to label it a sin........it simply comes down to this . . .
does it bother your conscience. God wrote his law upon your heart. if you feel convicted when you do it, its a sign that you shouldn't do it.
likewise...... you're to be Christ-like. Christ would never swear
