Major kudos to you for taking in Fonzie!! The world needs more people like you.
I used to breed cats, and I currently have two wonderful kitties of my own. I'd never be without them! I highly recommend looking into pet health insurance (I have my kitties insured at Banfield, which is located in Petsmart). Some pet owners don't get their pets the vaccines and flea treatments they need because it can be quite expensive. I have personally saved thousands of dollars by having the insurance, and someone with a single cat could easily save hundreds of dollars a year just on vaccines, checkups, flea preventatives, and other "necessities."
Also, make sure you are careful about the toys your cat plays with. Check them carefully, like you would for a child, to make sure that he can't tear something off and choke on it.
Above all....LOTS of love!

No, you don't sound stupid at all. Because you do care a lot about the cat you took in. :) Some stuff around the home that can be turned into toys are toilet paper rolls/paper towel rolls (mine loves to bat and chase it), foldable laundry hamper, decorative pebbles (kitty soccer to my cat; we play it all the time), tightly rolled balls of alumnium foil, bedroom slippers, shiny jar lids, paperbags, and cardboard boxes. His all time favourite toy is his furry catnip stuffed mouse which he brings with him wherever he goes, and the decorative pebbles. It's important to check kitty's toys every now and then for loose bits of strings and bells, and supervise him while playing. It takes a while before you learn what your cat really loves to play with, but those dangling wands usually do the trick. Make it interactive, like moving it fast (running away from kitty), and moving it slow (encouraging kitty to dash for it). Make it challenging, but let him win sometimes.
Shower him with love and affection, talk to him, and try to understand his vocal and body language. You're on the way to develop that long lasting bond of companionship. :)

My cat loves this toy I got for her. Its a plastic circle with a ball inside. It has holes so she can see and play with the ball. She also likes when I put catnip in a cardboard box. All cats are different, maybe she would just like a bird feeder outside a window.

Cats love to play chase. Their favorite thing is to simulate a "hunt and kill"
Start by taking a cat-teaser (a long piece of string with some feathers or streamers on the end, irresistable!) and dragging it along the floor in front of your cat, he should pounce on it, or at least be very interested in it. Tease him with it, wave it in the air, drag it on the floor, shake it... then RUN! Dragging the toy along behind you, your cat should chase it and be all focused on catching it... don't let him catch it yet, that would be too easy! Again, wave it around in the air, and let him bat at it, then suddenly run again! After a few short minutes, let him catch it, and praise him, he will play with it for a bit... but then make it come alive again! Run around a bit (getting out of breath yet?), and let him catch it again. This time, have some treats or bits of chicken or something yummy to give him after he finishes playing with it. This simuates their prey drive, as they chase prey down, play with it, and then eat it, and it makes for a very satisfied, tired cat. Then spend some time snuggling and petting, the poor tired kitty will love the attention :-)
You know those plastic shells that cheesy toys come in from the quarter machines? My cats LOVE those, they dribble them all over the house (I put a bell inside them to make it even more awesome), and even carry them around in their mouths.
Good luck with your kitty!

Cats love to play with anything that you pull so they can follow. Also get one of those cheap light pens my cats love to chase the light. A flat box with paw sized holes all over it and a treat ball(ball with treats inside) for kitty to play with. Kitties will play with almost anything when they are in the mood. It takes time for them to warm up to a new toy so don't be discouraged.

My cat loves to play with those little ponytail holders that you can buy around 30 of for like 3 dollars. She will pick them up, toss them in the air, bat them around on the floor. The only downfall is you will find them all over your house in places you would never dream to look!!

Ignore the idiots. ;)
Every cat has his own way of playing...some like to chase balls, others like to run around, others like to play hide and seek with your hand. etc Find out what your cat likes before spending a lot of money on useless toys. Scrunch a piece of paper and throw it...does he run after it? Yes? Go buy a ball. Try with a piece of string...yes? Go buy a stringy toy. Try with a pen (be careful not to poke his eye out)...if yes...just give him that pen cause they chew on them and you don't want to use them afterwards...trust me.
Good luck..cats are wonderful animals...self-suficient, intelligent, clean, hardly ever smell and good company. And 99 per cent of cats will keep a place mouse/rat free...despite what the idiot poster before said.
Good luck!!

My cat loves this one toy, it has a plastic handle with a feather on the end of it. She is constantly chasing it when we sway it in front of her.
