(a) check for pedestrians to your left and right in the crosswalk ahead of you and the one to the right across the road you're turning into.
(b) check to the left for oncoming cars
(c) check ahead of you for cars making a U-Turn (although usually they have to yield to you)

After verifying that it is, indeed, legal to turn right on red, you look first to traffic coming in the opposite direction making a left turn. If they are on red as well, you look for traffic coming from your left. They will be the ones posing the most threat because you are entering their lane of travel.

You're supposed to look left, right, and left again. The second left look is to make sure no one snuck up on you. Your eyes will automatically get the "forward" part when you turn your head.

I always check my tail too. 360 degrees is important on a motorcycle (my usual transport). I drive car/ truck the same way.

You look towards the left at oncoming traffic, then you look to make sure anyone isn't making a U-turn. And last but by far not least, you make sure no one is in the cross walk.

well, obviously you have to look to the left to make sure no one is coming. also you've got to check the crosswalk to make sure no one is crossing the street! then look at the road where you're driving to make sure there are no more pedestrians or any crazy drivers in your way.

YOU DON"T ! RED MEANS STOP, DOESN"T IT? Actually, maybe in America it doesn't; if so, that might explain why so many of us visitors to China nearly get killed, assuming they've adopted the American system as they've adopted so much else from the US. One of my main pieces of advice to friends coming to China is "NEVER TRUST THE LITTLE GREEN MAN".
