Uh... you are just asking for trouble with that question. My guess its that you are a preteen or a teen and the guy you like does not like you back or picked someone "bettter" than you.
Its life. Your question would be as unfair as to me asking: why do women pick up older men? Have you ever noticed that? Older men always get the best chicks. Guys do notice nice girls as well as girls do notice good guys, however this is not a matter of who is nice or not but who finds who attractive.
Think of the nerdiest, nicest yet not better looking guy you know. What if he likes you? would it be your fault if you dont like him back?
