I purchased my boss two gifts which I know he'll like but don't expect him to buy me one.

How about you?

No, I would not have bought my boss gifts. I have read and understand you extra infomation. It will bring something weird to your business relationship. I would just stick to giving him a nice professional ( read cold ) christmas card.
On a side note just the fact that you decided to ask this question shows that you are having second thoughts. Listen to you gut and please skip giving those gifts ... and yes two gifts is even weirder than one gift.

I think it's sweet but I also think that since it is a small office you might want to say, when would be a good time for us to exchange presents because I am excited to show you what I got.

That way, he'll have a heads up - he would want the option of getting something for you as well.

I would not buy my boss a Christmas gift. It's not appropriate. You could give him/her a card, with a short note wishing him/her all the best for the holidays.

I would give him a general merchandise album from www.quixtar.com If you don't like those I am sure there are other companies out there. I like these because you can spend $40.00 -$400.00 and no one knows exactly how much you spent because they don't have any prices in the brochure. They order the gift online or snail mail & it comes straight to their door. The best part is they get to pick out what they really want! I use these for any hard to shop for person.

If I had a boss and he/she was nice to me through the year, then i would, regardless of whether or not I'll get one in return. The thing about gifts is that is the thought that matters. what are your thoughts about buying the gifts?

If your boss does not give you a gift for Christmas, you may be making him feel obligated by getting him one. I suggest that instead of a monetary gift, you offer to buy his lunch. That is something he can reciprocate with you that won't make him feel like he has to go pick something "personal" for you.

I think that's very polite and wouldn't take it as inappropiate .........If you have a good casual relationship maybe and you have no other co-workers but I think since you already bought them you should give them to him.Give him a gift receipt that way if he doesnt want it he can return it.

yeah, but something that's office related or a card

Some people like pastries and home bakes. Don't do anything out of the ordinary. I'm sure he will get the hint.
