They have a reputation for being very, very smart. However, they require lots of excercise. They are classified as "working dogs" and they need something to do in order to be fulfilled. They are not the kind of dogs who will lie around and sleep all day.

There is a lot of information on the Internet about Australian Shepherds. They are wonderful dogs. Very smart and loyal. They make wonderful family pets. They are great in obedience, Agility, Herding, Fly Ball, etc. These are herding dogs by nature and will chase or harass animals such as, sheep, horses, goats, cattle, etc., unless trained not to. They require brushing as their coat does shed. If they are inside dogs, they will shed more due to the warmer environment. They are not considered a long haired breed, but are more a medium length. They don't have an undercoat like the German Shepherd, but will still shed. Please consider this before getting any dog as any responsible dog owner would.

We have an Aussie mix and he is a handful!! He is just about 1 yr old and has destroyed several dog beds and has chewed on our hutch (the corner). I don't know how much longer we will be able to put up with him. He also tries to herd our older dog - a female who gets really irritated by his attacks.

He does sleep in bed with us - a king size - we'd like to break him of this.

They need lots of running room. We don;t have a fenced yard and no dog parks close by.

We have spent a lot of money on dog training and will have to go to more classes before we are comfortable letting him outside off leash.

Hope this helps.

You'll find more information if you look it up on the net or get some books, or perhaps talk to other aussi owners, visit a pet store, locate breeders. Where ever you look you are going to find out more than you know now and more than can be given on this site without writing a book.

People love to talk about their pets and would love to share what they know with you, you just need but look.

They are high energy dogs that need a job. If your sister lives on a farm that is great. They do not make good city dogs. They MUST have room to run. I have two Aussies rescued because they were bought by apartment owners who didn't know what to do with them because they were hyper. They are herding dogs. They were bred to work for a living.

Have one. They come in tri color and blue merl. Make sure you don't get a Queensland Heel-er by mistake, they have a much more aggressive personality. It is very important to train your puppy. By breed, they will be nippers (that is how they get the cows to move, by nipping their heals). You have to discourage that behavior. They can live outside with a proper dog house. They are very very strong, mine can open the garage door. They are gregarious animal. You can pair them up with another dog like a Golden retriever. They are smart. I taught my dog hand commands so that I could run her in a Field.

very intellegent, need TONS of exercise, not suitable for apartments and some city living (unless you have a big back yard- BIG)...they love to run run run...keeping them cooped up all day is a NO NO! they will get way out of control. i have had many of these in my dog obedience, great breed, must have a lot of RUNNING TIME! etc. must be accupied. i would suggest a golden or a cockapoo!
