I'm thinking about getting one for my wife this Christmas.

The Rebel XT is a fine camera. Be sure to note that it does not have a proper spotmeter, though. A center-weighted average is the best they can do. If she is a beginner, this will not make much difference.

The slightly smaller size may be just perfect for your wife. If you already own Canon cameras and lenses, this makes it a better choice.

I bought a Nikon D50 for my wife, because it is smaller and lighter than my Nikon's, but she has access to my lenses, should she want to use them.

Canon makes excellent cameras. I personally have a Nikon but that's because I had a few lenses from the 35mm days.

You will be happy with it.

Only suggestion (if you're ordering from the web): Beware the lowball web ads. They offer a low price to start and get your CC info. Then they do the bait&switch and tell you that the camera is only available as a "kit" with a $100 tripod and other overpriced crap you don't need.

I've bought several cameras from

They are honest and will not jerk you around with expensive ad-ons.

nice camera (a little too small for my hands, though). easy to use and comfortable for smaller hands. Big hands may find it too small.
