Picking a Dog is like picking a spouse, you need one that fits your lifestyle. Many large breed dogs need a lot of exercise so are not ideal for apartments, if you have children some breeds are better than others. Best advice I can offer is speak to a vet they will give you an honest unbiased opinion. As a dog owner we all think the breed we have is the best. But different strokes for different folks.

What do you want it for? A pet? A working dog? Protection?
Labs are sweet, but can be a tad hyper and don't even think about them if you keep poultry.
Same goes for English Springer Spaniels.
Fox Terriers are loving and funny and stay fairly small. They have a lot of energy.
Beagles are smart and loyal, but will follow a scent until they get lost (on occasion). And if you don't like barking, forget it.
Boarder Collies are very intelligent but can get antsy when their "pack" doesn't stay in one place. Ours wanted us to all be in one part of the yard and would try to herd the family.
Great Danes are gentle, loving, and huge. They are hard on furniture and houses...their tales are like whips...forget keeping knick-knacks.
Dachshunds are loyal, loving and protective. Prone to back problems, but make good guard dogs...well, alarm dogs at any rate. They can be stubborn and hard to house break.
Fox hounds are smart and loyal and determined, but again, BIG barkers...or rather howlers.
We've had all these breeds. We've liked them all for different reasons. It all depends on what you want in a dog.

newfoundland... big gentle dog. It was the original peter pan dog that was the nanny of the kids--and for reason--> it is seen as a babysitting type dog that is gentle in its protectiveness with the young. Protective and so loyal to the WHOLE family, that some have troubles when they need to be adopted to a new family. They just want to go home and get depressed. But, over time, things will get better.
Also, when a stranger comes over, many dont bark like mad to scare the stranger but will literally stand sideways between you and the stranger at the door until you let the dog know it is okay. They use their massive size just to let stranger know "dont harm my family" with out even showing aggression. Sure they eat alot as pups when they are growing up, but their food intake slows down as they get older. Really, it does!

To be truthful, a mutt is your best breed. They can come free and they not have the problems of purebreds. I had a Collie and Border Collie, purebreds and they were good around children. The Collie did develop hip displacea as she got older. Sometimes it was OK and other times she was in much pain. The Vet said to just give her Tylenol, I think, been awhile and then he give us some stronger stuff for when she needed. Mutts never have these problems, NEVER, or I have never seen it.

well l guess i would have to say The Jack Russell, as l am breeding them and own both a male and female, they are a small breed, learn things at a fast rate, and get on with just about any kind of animal.
Great with kids of all ages, love a good run in the park, and rides in cars, hang around you all the time and are very friendly little guys,

The answer to that question is different for every person, and every family situation... personally, I am suited to Saint Bernards, I love their gentle temperment, their big teddy bear personalities, and, yes, even the constant drool. They are just the right dog for my family at this time! Every dog breed is the best!

i think mutts are awesome dogs they have a mixture of qualities from different breeds of dogs. if u get the right mix then u have an awesome dog also they tend to have less health problems then pure breds because sometimes with purebreds the blood line can be to tight causing health problems. but if u are'nt crazy about mutts labradors make awesome dogs i own one and shes smart, loyal, and a good family dog. also pitbulls are very loyal and protective but it can only be in a one dog household. if you dont have alot of room beagals are good family dogs and can take ruff kids playing with them. Chihuahuas are good too they are big little dogs well with big hearts atleast. And any retriever is willing too please. i hope this helps with your question********WildFilly*********

the best breed of dog is the kind of dog that you find at the animal shelter that needs a home.
adopt a dog, any dog will do, one with a beating heart and a wagging tail.
