The new Conair hand drier with straightener is supposed to work really well.

To your first question:
1. Test how hot the flat iron is with a piece of paper/toilet paper, and if it looks like it burnt or got yellow it may be too hot for your hair.
2. If you blow dry your hair almost straight first then it would be less time with the heat on the hair.
3. Comb the strand and move the flat iron slower down your hair.
4. Use a heat protecting product or something that is meant to help straighten out hair.
To your second question,
Get a moisture treatment or a protein treatment to restore your hair, use a mild shampoo/conditioner (DO NOT USE TEARLESS SHAMPOO), and try to do everything above when you straighten your hair...
If all else fails and your REALLY fed up with your hair, get a body wave (a perm with large rods), your hair won't be so curly but its will still have a slight curl or wave to it.

When using a straightener, take a kleenex first and close the straightener on the kleenex. If the kleenex turns a yellowish color the straightener is too HOT for your hair.
I always like VO5 hot oil treatments for that extra conditioning treatment.

you should test the straightener. but a good thing to keep hair from being damaged is the heat spray. i know mane and tail has some but i think panteen does too. The VO5 treatments work, or there is henna and placenta. it works miricles!

super straight balm from pureology with a lil bit of shine max(pureology as well) mixed in. I also recently tried their shampoo designed to straighten hair; it draws the moisture out so it dries quicker but not frizzy or dry looking...every product they have is amazing!

before you straighten it use a thermal protective serum. But i think the serum works best if you put it in when your hair is wet and then you either blow dry it or you let it dry on its own!

You should try Biosilk, and I also use something from Pantene I forget what its called something reconstructive, it smells real good and keeps your hair shiny, but you have to use something to protect it for sure,,,check out Biosilk though its real good!! A little spendy but so worth it!!
