there are grades of laughter, from least to greatest the standards are:
lol = laughing out loud
rofl = rolling on the floor laughing
roflmao = rolling on the floor laughing my butt off (not really butt)
Some people also include hehe in chat contexts (lower than lol on the laugh meter but scalable h
And then, just to throw a monkey wrench into the works, some people *still* use lol to mean "lots of luck" (but hopefully the context is clear - in an online game if you tell somebody your dog just died right before you start and they respond 'lol' it could be that they just mean to wish you luck).

Long before 'txt' and I/net, it meant "Lots of Love".
With the arrival of txt and I/net, it acquired the additional meaning "Laughing out Loud".
Some 'dictionary' sites will give you both definitions of the abbreviation.
Now you can get "Smiley Faces" or "Emoticons" to express abbreviations like 'brb' and 'lol', they've even added one 'ROFLOL' - "Rolling on (the) Floor, Laughing out Loud"!
"LOL" - whichever way you want to take it!

lol is a word that mostly teens use. It means Laughing Out Loud. You use this word when you see or write something funny to show that you are laughing.

It means Laugh out loud that you are laughing
because it can sound quite harsh typing & lol lightens the mood so to speak or you can use haha or hehe or grin smile etc
