Wow, I can relate to you. My husband is very, very hard to shop for.
I always try to lean toward things he's hinted about. If he doesn't hint, I come right out and ask him in an off the cuff manner.
If you have bought things for him before, you can use his past reactions to other gifts as a guide.

Cologne, gift card to a specialty shop that interests him, it would help to know what his likes, hobbies, etc. are. I have the same problem with my husband. I never know what to buy for him.
