I would still get progressive scan 480p through component cables, but i don't know if its any better than 480i. I already own a ps2, but my version doesn't have progressive scan. Its a Samsung DVD-HD860 HDMI Upconversion DVD Player

If you have a big screen tv then you will probably would be able to tell the difference---480p is better than 480i because it will give you a smoother picture and more film-like. You should return the Samsung player if your tv is not HD. Just remember this when you buy a upconvert player, except for HD-dvd & Blu-Ray, all existent dvd's are mastered with only a 480 resolution.

If you don't hane an input for a HDMI cable then I don't think you will get the full benefits of the upconverting DVD player, ask the store where you bought it.

LG up converting DVD players has the capability to up convert thru component video cable.Others do that thru HDMI.
The up converted version is good if your TV supports it
