A ceremonial magician has everything planned out to a T. This has to face this way and I have to say this THIS way otherwise THIS will happen THAT way and to fix THAT I'd need to do THIS. Ceremonial Magicians usually are in-depth studiers of the Kabbalah, along with Crowley's works.
Other pratictioners tend to be more laid back and lax when doing rituals, without worrying that not being precise enough could get you hurt/killed/etc.

Well, they are different in lots of details, but I think the main difference is that CMs try to control and contain the forces of Nature to do their bidding, whereas, for example, Wiccans seek to work *with* the forces of Nature.
