The Christian calendar can be seen as two things.

This year is 2006 AD
but to non-Christians it is 2006 CE

CE stands for Common Era. This represents that as well as it being 2006 years since Jesus, the number 2006 is also just a number and even if you do not believe in Jesus you can use this date just as a date and not an anniversary. So 2006 CE is a non-Christian way of saying 2006 AD.

I'm happy to use any referance point as a starter, could now be in 2006 or 34,543, for all it matters.

If the decision has been made to have the start date derived from a fictitous story its fine by me !
