i have a 9 year old chihuahua. he's been considerably healthy for that past years. this year, however, he's had daily seizures. based on the information that i looked up, it did not seem to be serious, as he did not have watering of the eyes, uncontrollable bladder, or any other symptoms. it seemed to me that he lost control of his hind legs. this past month, my chihuahua has been shrieking/yelping in pain constantly. it would occur more often at night. there seems to be no problem with his walking or his legs. however, he is now more reluctant to walk and excercise. when he does, he is slow and looks weak.

i've read several articles and the symptoms my dog has are similar to that of lameness. i am still very uncertain.

any ideas of what my dog may have? could this have been a result of exposure to paint/toxic chemicals? please share!

It is very unusual for a dog to start having seizures so late in life. They will normall begin to occur between the ages of 1 and 5. But if the dog is having them everyday and has been having them for a while, it is unlikely to be caused by pain/chemicals.

Definetely see a vet. A vet will normally want to see a record you have been keeping of the seizures and what they are like, then they can draw blood and try to determine the cause.

My German Shepard has been having them for 2 years. Treatment can be expensive. And your case sounds even more serious. Not sure where you got the info about watery eyes, ect., but I would double check your sources to see how reliable they are. You can try typing in Canine Epilepsy. I wonder if it could be a stroke? I had another older dog, actually 2 older dogs, that had several strokes late in their lives. These were accompanied by yelping and loss of leg control, similar to what you mentioned above. Often afterwards their bodies would remain in uncomfortable positions (head tilted sideways) for hours.

Again, contact a vet. I'm not sure how long chihuahuas are expected to live, but the symptoms you are describing lead me to believe he is nearing the end, although I hope I am wrong.

Best of Luck.

Chis are seizure prone dogs. Your pet needs to be examined by a vet to look for underlying cause of the hind end problems.
The dog could have some sort of spinal problems and pressure on the cord is cutting off feeling in the hind legs. The dog could be in pain if it is yelping and shrieking.
They may need to put your dog on daily medication to control the seizures. May Chis take a daily or every other day med to control them.
But your dog needs to have a lameness exam and checked for the seizures.

all that similar stuff became occurring to my moms chihuahua and it became no longer good. it could be a tumor even with the undeniable fact that it may also only be an inner ear an infection. have the dr. examine that earlier you get all worrried about maximum cancers and tumors. unfortunatly it really is what it became with my moms dogs plus she became blind in both eyes. she turned right into slightly older than 9 and had to be positioned to sleep precise earlier christmas. her dogs became also no longer you common dogs she became like a teacup, she ought to slot in a mug. so surgical operation became particularly a lot out of the question.
