how do gel ur hair?

i just got a haircut, and its lil bit shorter than i thought, im a guy
i usually put my hair down, and keep it messy, u know wat im talkin about, eh?

but w/ short hair, it dont look good to put ur hair down, so i decided to gel it
but mine is a bit too long to do spikey hair
so... how do u just put ur hair up and keep it?
even after 10 mins after i gel it, it kinda comes down.
is it cuz my hair is heavy? or i have to dry my hair COMPLETELY before i gel it?
