I have a teacup maltese puppy and since she's a puppy, I don't want her to go outside to poop and get sick or something, so I bought a bunch of pee rags for her to defecate on. (A mat that I purchased at a pet store that's like a litter box kind of) Since she's going to be around 3 lbs at most, is it considered weird to just let her use the pee rags for the rest of her life?

Before you think I'm insane, I only keep one at a time and I keep it in the laundry room.

First of all, do you have a fenced in yard or are you in a place where she has no where to run freely and safely?
My grandmother has a teacup poodle that barely weighs 3 lbs. She is puppy pad trained. The pad stays in the bathroom floor and she uses it just as any other dog would use the yard. She's too little to be out in the cold and picks up parasites from other dog's feces very easily due to her size.
They pick up the poop & flush it as soon as she goes so it's not just laying around stinking up the place. A 3 pound dog does not poop that much...not enough to stink up your house. If you keep fresh pads down, it's no less hygenic than a cat's litterbox.
It is good for her to get out every once in a while to roam and mark, but it won't hurt her to be pad trained. Especially if you don't mind. She's your dog!!

My sons Grandma had two very small dogs that were no bigger than a small cat. She used pee wee pads that are made for these small dogs. She also put them in the laundry room. She did this for several years before she passed away. She also used a cat litter box with a tall cover. No, its not weird. She never had any problems with this method. When the Grandma died the dogs went to another home in the family and did just fine adjusting. These dogs were very happy and not poor little doggys!

Wouldn't you rather avoid the long-term hassle of having to clean up after the dog all of the time? Laundry room or not, it's going to stink everytime you go in there, not to mention the 'presents' sitting there for you to look at when you go clean the clothes you're going to be wearing out.
Train the dog to go outside like the rest of civilization does. It'll be a good opportunity for you to get some air and for the dog to get some exercise.

I don't care what size the dog is I wouldn't want it going in my house. How will you feel when you're having a nice dinner party and your dog comes in and poops...or imagine the odor after it's left out all night.
Teach your dog to go outside and a command word, better now than later.
Ps. If you observe her outdoor interactions (which you should) she shouldn't have problem with getting sick or something as you expressed concern about. If she can go outside alone than make sure you have a secure area your tiny dog won't be able to get out of.

So wait, you don't take your dog outside for walks? Thats bordering on cruelty, if she has all her shots like she should, she won't get sick from going outside, actually I'd bet that going inside would create more problems. What if you have to rehome her for some reason? NO ONE wants a dog that doesn't know how to go outside, and its near impossible to re-train them. Do you really want to pick up dog poop all over your floor for the next 15 years? I had to live with two dogs who went inside (no walks or anything!) and as they get older, they get much more lelient as to where they go, and they went pretty much everywhere, it was horrible to have to pick up poop everytime they went. Thankfully I only had to stay there for three months.
Don't count on anyone wanting to come visit you when your house is completely soaked with dog pee and theres dog poop lying all over the house.
BTW, there isn't any such thing as a "teacup" anything. Its a word made up by irresponsible breeders to make money for an unhealthy, poorly bred dog, you got ripped.

This is a puppy thing. Dogs don't like to mess in their den. They are really kinda clean freaks. You can easily train maltie to do the outside business. You both will be thankful in the long run.

think about the overall holistic health of your pet and her not being able to experience the outdoors and mark her territory. just b/c she is small in size does not mean she doesn't share the instinctual desire of other dogs to be outdoors, run, and exercise in the fresh air. i think you are being lazy by not properly house training her and even worse, not having the compassion to let your dog out at least once a day! heaven forbid you someday can't keep her and she grows in to an adult who has not been potty trained. she will have a miserable time adjusting to the rules of her new home. poor doggy.

i dont think you are insane at all. but the dog will need to be taken out for excersise no matter what. the fresh air and the environment is good for your little cute puppy. they like to get out also. so it might be alittle mean if ya never let the little guy out of the house. merry christmas.

if you keep it cleaned everyday and like you said, keep it in an area where your not in all the time then i dont see why not. it sounds like a tiny puppy so i think i would do the same thing.... sometimes. air freshener, baking soda, febreeze and lysol should be your best friend. DONT USE THESE HARSH PRODUCTS AROUND YOUR PUPPY!!!

I think you have the right idea and weird or not who cares, it is your baby and your life , ENJOY BOTH. Many people paper train their dogs and use your method every day, some by choice and others simply do not want to chance picking something up. My Toy Fox Terrier ( LULU ) is paper trained but also loves our back yard. Good luck and God Bless you both ~~~~
